Hello and welcome to Your Path to Career Success, the podcast that helps you build a thriving career through actionable insights and expert advice.

I’m Kathryn, and today, in this final episode of Season 6, we’re tackling a challenge that affects everyone at some point—procrastination.

Whether you’re a professional juggling deadlines, an entrepreneur building your business, or someone simply trying to tick off tasks on your to-do list, procrastination can be a major roadblock to productivity, growth, and ultimately, success.

Maybe you find yourself putting off important projects until the last minute, endlessly scrolling instead of starting that big task, or waiting for the ‘perfect moment’ to take action—only to feel frustrated and overwhelmed later.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the good news: procrastination isn’t a personality flaw, and it’s not something you’re stuck with forever. It’s a habit—and habits can be changed.

So, in today’s episode, we’re going to dive deep into:
✅ Why we procrastinate – the psychology behind why we delay tasks (and it’s not just about being lazy!)
✅ The real cost of procrastination – how it impacts your career, confidence, and success
✅ Practical strategies to overcome it – proven techniques that will help you get things done, even when motivation is low

By the end of this episode, you’ll have a game plan to beat procrastination once and for all—so you can stop delaying, start taking action, and feel more in control of your time and goals.

But before we jump in, I invite you to grab your favourite beverage, find a comfy spot, grab a notebook or just sit back and relax and keep listening for those lightbulb moments!

So, if you’ve ever struggled with procrastination, or you just want to work smarter and more efficiently, this episode is for you. Let’s dive in!

Segment 1: Why Do We Procrastinate?
Let’s start with the basics – why do we procrastinate? It’s easy to dismiss it as laziness, but that’s rarely the real issue. In most cases, procrastination is a coping mechanism rather than a character flaw.

At its core, procrastination is about avoiding discomfort. Whether it’s the fear of failing, the pressure to be perfect, or the sheer size of the task ahead, we delay taking action to escape those uncomfortable emotions in the moment. Unfortunately, this short-term relief often leads to long-term stress, guilt, and an even bigger workload later.

So, what’s really behind procrastination? It often comes down to these key reasons:
• Fear of failure – We hesitate to start because we worry we won’t do it well enough. This fear can make even simple tasks feel daunting, leading us to delay them indefinitely.
• Perfectionism – If we believe something has to be flawless, we might avoid starting altogether. The idea of producing anything less than perfect can be paralyzing.
• Overwhelm – When a task feels too big, too complex, or too time-consuming, our brains go into avoidance mode. Instead of tackling it head-on, we put it off, hoping we’ll feel more capable later.
• Lack of motivation – Some tasks simply don’t spark interest or excitement. Without a sense of purpose or urgency, it’s easy to push them aside for more enjoyable or immediate distractions.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

The good news is that procrastination isn’t a fixed trait—it’s a habit that can be changed. The key to overcoming it is understanding why you're doing it in the first place. Once you identify the root cause, you can apply the right strategies to break the cycle and regain control over your time and productivity.

Segment 2: The Real Cost of Procrastination
Now, let’s talk about the real impact of procrastination. It’s not just about missed deadlines or last-minute stress—it can have lasting effects on both your personal and professional life.

At first, delaying tasks might seem harmless, even justifiable. You tell yourself you work better under pressure, or that you’ll feel more motivated tomorrow. But over time, chronic procrastination creates a cycle that can be difficult to break. The consequences go beyond just unfinished to-do lists.

Here’s how long-term procrastination can affect you:
• Damage to your reputation – In a professional setting, consistently missing deadlines or delaying important tasks can make you appear unreliable. Colleagues and managers may start to question your work ethic, which can impact your credibility and career growth.
• Missed opportunities – Whether it’s applying for a promotion, starting a new project, or even pursuing a personal goal, hesitation can mean lost chances. The longer you delay, the more doors may close before you even get the chance to step through them.
• Negative impact on mental well-being – Procrastination isn’t just about avoiding work—it’s often accompanied by guilt, anxiety, and self-doubt. The mental burden of knowing you’ve left things undone can lead to stress, overwhelm, and even a drop in confidence.

But here’s the good news: procrastination isn’t a life sentence.

Once you recognise the problem, you can take action to change it. By understanding why you procrastinate and adopting strategies to manage it, you can break free from the cycle and take back control of your time, energy, and success.

Segment 3: Practical Strategies to Beat Procrastination
Alright, let’s get to the good part – how do you overcome procrastination?

The key is to take small, intentional actions that break the cycle of delay. Procrastination thrives on hesitation, overwhelm, and perfectionism, so the best way to beat it is to make starting easy. You don’t need more willpower—you need the right strategies.

Here are five practical techniques you can start using today:
1. The Two-Minute Rule
If a task takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. Reply to that quick email, schedule that meeting, or file that document. These small tasks may seem insignificant, but when left undone, they pile up and create unnecessary stress. By handling them straight away, you prevent them from cluttering your to-do list and your mind.

2. The Pomodoro Technique
Struggling to focus? Try the Pomodoro Technique:
• Set a timer for 25 minutes and work with full focus.
• When the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break.
• Repeat this cycle four times, then take a longer break (15–30 minutes).
This method trains your brain to focus in short bursts while preventing mental fatigue. It also turns work into a game—you’re simply working against the clock, not your motivation levels.

3. Set Micro-Goals
Big tasks can feel intimidating, which makes us delay starting. Instead of saying, "I need to finish this entire report," break it down:
✅ "I’ll write the introduction in the next 10 minutes."
✅ "I’ll outline the main points before lunch."
✅ "I’ll draft one section this afternoon."
When you focus on just the next step, the task feels more manageable, and progress builds momentum.

4. Use the "5-Second Rule"
Whenever you feel the urge to procrastinate, count down: 5-4-3-2-1… GO.
This simple technique, developed by Mel Robbins, interrupts hesitation and forces action. It works because it shifts your brain from overthinking mode into doing mode. Next time you feel yourself stalling, count down and take the first step—whether it’s opening your laptop, making a phone call, or writing the first sentence.

5. Find an Accountability Partner
Telling someone your goals makes you more likely to follow through. Share your plans with a friend, colleague, or mentor, and ask them to check in on your progress. Knowing that someone else is expecting results can be a powerful motivator to stay on track.  I have had an accountability buddy for a number of years alongside my Business Coach and both these individuals have helped me shape my business into what it is today.

Episode 7 from Season 6 goes into more detail on some of these techniques so take a listen.

Procrastination isn’t about a lack of ability—it’s about the mental barriers that make starting difficult. But with the right approach, you can train yourself to take action, build better habits, and reclaim control over your time and productivity.

Segment 4: Overcoming Mental Barriers
Even with the best strategies in place, there will still be days when procrastination creeps in. Motivation fluctuates, distractions arise, and some tasks just feel impossible to start.

But here’s the thing—overcoming procrastination isn’t about being perfect. It’s about developing the right mindset to push through, even when you don’t feel like it.

When you’re struggling, try these powerful mindset shifts:
1. Progress Over Perfection
Done is better than perfect. Perfectionism often leads to procrastination because we fear not doing something well enough. But the truth is, imperfect action still moves you forward, while overthinking keeps you stuck. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on making progress—one small step at a time.

2. Visualise Success
Instead of focusing on how hard a task feels, shift your focus to how amazing it will feel once it’s done. Picture the sense of relief, the accomplishment, or the doors that completing this task will open for you. Sometimes, just reminding yourself of the why behind the task is enough to break the mental resistance.

3. Reward Yourself
Your brain loves rewards. Use that to your advantage! After finishing a challenging task, treat yourself to something enjoyable—whether it’s a short break, a coffee, or an episode of your favourite show. When you create positive reinforcement, you train your brain to associate productivity with pleasure, making it easier to stay on track in the future.

Remember, procrastination isn’t a personal failure—it’s a habit. And like any habit, it can be changed with the right mindset and consistent effort.

Closing Thoughts & Call to Action
Procrastination is something we all struggle with at some point—it’s a natural response to overwhelm, fear of failure, or simply a lack of motivation. But the good news? It doesn’t have to control your productivity or dictate your success.

By recognising why you procrastinate—whether it’s perfectionism, fear, or feeling stuck—you can begin to break free from the cycle. Instead of blaming yourself for delays, shift your focus to solutions. Practical strategies like the Two-Minute Rule, the Pomodoro Technique, and setting micro-goals help make tasks feel more manageable, reducing the mental barriers that keep you from starting.

And even when strategies are in place, some days will still feel tough. That’s when mindset shifts become crucial. Remember:
• Progress over perfection—small steps are better than no steps.
• Visualising success—focusing on the reward can push you through resistance.
• Rewarding yourself—celebrating wins keeps you motivated for the next challenge.

Procrastination isn’t a flaw—it’s a habit. And like any habit, it can be changed with the right approach. The key is to take action, even when you don’t feel ready. Because once you start, momentum builds, and productivity follows.
Now, it’s your turn.
